Probabilistic Safety Assessment (PSA)

This training teaches you how to systematically and quantitatively assess the risks associated with nuclear installations. You will learn to apply the three different levels of Probabilistic Safety Assessment (PSA). This enables you to identify and address weaknesses in safety or reliability, ensuring an optimal level of safety in the working and living environment. PSA techniques are also applied during the construction or modification of installations. Examples include the construction of a laboratory, modifications to a nuclear reactor, or the maintenance of a flood defence structure.

The objectives of the Probabilistic Safety Assessment are to:

  • Assess the frequency of core damage, spent fuel damage and damage to the irradiation facility of the nuclear power plant (Level 1 PSA);
  • Assess the nature, extent and frequency of radiological releases outside the containment (Level 2 PSA);
  • Assess the risk to the population and the environment resulting from the operation of the nuclear power plant (Level 3 PSA) and compare this with Dutch requirements.

Benodigde voorkennis & ervaring


This course is intended for advisors, analysts and decision-makers in the field of nuclear safety, engineers and consultants working in the nuclear sector, and safety authorities involved in or contributing to the design of nuclear installations.


Programma


The training consists of four contact days, combining classroom-based theory sessions with practical exercises and assignments. There is no exam. The following topics are covered:

  • System analyses and fault trees
  • Dependent failures
  • Determining accident scenarios
  • Initiating events
  • Human error
  • Interpretation and use of results
  • External events
  • Containment event trees
  • Source terms
  • Risk to the population
