Small Modular Reactors (SMR's)
An SMR (Small Modular Reactor) is a type of nuclear reactor that offers several advantages compared to currently operating (large-scale) nuclear power plants. SMRs are expected to be better suited for the production of, for example, hydrogen, process heat, and industrial heat. They can also be deployed in remote areas for electricity generation. Depending on the location, infrastructure, and the needs of the customer or end user, they can be operated off-grid (i.e., independently of the electricity grid). This makes them particularly attractive for industrial areas located further inland, where grid congestion is an issue. At NRG PALLAS, extensive research is being conducted in the field of SMRs.
