New group of teachers builds expertise in nuclear technology
A group of twelve teachers from vocational colleges and universities of applied sciences has begun Teach-the-Teacher, a training programme offered by the Nuclear Academy. During the five-day programme, the teachers explore the theory and practice of nuclear technology, preparing them to incorporate it into their own teaching.
The nuclear sector is growing, along with the demand for skilled staff. “Teachers are essential to reaching these future professionals,” says Kitty Neefjes of the Nuclear Academy. “Through Teach-the-Teacher, we offer teachers up-to-date knowledge, practical experience and a network within the sector. This helps them to inform and inspire their students and prepare them for the opportunities the nuclear sector offers.”
Exploring nuclear technology in practice
Teach-the-Teacher consists of five training days spread over several months. The programme gives teachers a deeper understanding of topics including radiation protection, reactor physics, reactor technology, medical isotopes, safety culture and national policy. By combining lectures with site visits and meetings with industry professionals, the teachers gain a broad understanding of the sector. They also discover the opportunities it offers their students.
Teachers from across the country
Participants include teachers from Nova College in Beverwijk, HZ University of Applied Sciences, Firda and Saxion University of Applied Sciences. Some already teach subjects related to nuclear technology, while others want to better prepare their students for the growing demand for nuclear expertise. Jeroen Smulders, a lecturer at HZ University of Applied Sciences, explains why he is taking part: “I chose the Teach-the-Teacher programme to hear about the experiences of different companies in the nuclear sector. I want to enrich my knowledge with real-world examples that will help me get my students excited about nuclear technology.”
