Jason Swan
Dr Jason Swan is a leader in nuclear materials and chemistry, with more than ten years of experience supporting the design, manufacturing, qualification, and assurance of high‑integrity applications.
His career began at Rolls‑Royce Submarines in 2013, where he served as a Materials Technologist following the completion of his PhD in Metallurgy and Materials from the University of Birmingham and an MEng in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Nottingham. He advanced to the position of Group Leader, overseeing a team of engineers, directing verification activities with external suppliers, and managing the metallurgy laboratory that supports operational delivery.
In 2020, he transitioned to Rolls‑Royce SMR, where, as Materials Manager, he leads the materials portfolio, sets strategic direction, develops work plans, and recruits and mentors his team. Currently acting as Head of Materials and Chemistry, his primary objectives include the successful completion of the Generic Design Assessment (GDA) in the UK, finalisation of the generic design, delivery of site-specific support, and guiding future strategy to sustain essential materials and chemistry expertise within RR SMR.
Dr Swan represents the materials discipline externally, serving as an advisor to both the EPRI Materials Reliability Program and International Materials Research (IMR). He is also recognised as a Fellow of IOM3.
