Matti Vaaheranta
My name is Matti Vaaheranta. I worked for about 15 years in the paper industry as maintenance manager and project manager positions. In 2009, I decided to do something different and started as a Maintenance Manager (2009-2012) at a nuclear power plant in a company called TVO. I worked in OL3 (EPR) project as an electrical engineering manager 2012-2015 and Plant lifetime manager 2015-2019. I have been actively involved in developing and implementing ageing management programs for both the existing (45 y old) and the new plant at Olkiluoto. My educational background is in automation, electrical engineering, and information technology.
I worked at WANO’s Paris Center for three years starting in 2020 as Engineering Area Lead, conducting several Peer Reviews and Follow-ups. After Paris, Now I am working at TVO as Head of Asset Management.
Over the years, I have gained extensive experience in the nuclear power industry, which helps me understand key aspects of plant operations and safety. My long maintenance experience close to the field has provided a good understanding of practical work both in the control room and in maintenance areas. SALTO missions have taught me IAEA safety principles, standards, and working in an international environment. Working with older boiling water reactors (BWR) and newer pressurized water reactors (PWR, EPR) has taught me the differences between old and new plants and various technologies and needs.
