Jan Boelen

Jan Boelen(1960) is managing director (CEO) of COVRA N.V., the National Radioactive Waste Management organisation in The Netherlands.

The Netherlands have committed to building two (possibly more) large scale NPP’s and facilitate development of SMR’s. In anticipation of these developments, COVRA has recently updated its strategic position and asset management masterplan to address this growth.

COVRA is tasked with managing the integrated waste chain, from origination till a deep geological repository (GDR), innovation and research, consultancy and decommissioning. It is  the knowledge provider for policy development on radioactive waste. COVRA manages the funds for realisation of the GDR.

Jan graduated from Groningen University with a master (Ir.) in (Bio)technology. After starting his career with Shell, he moved to Air Liquide, building on his expertise in energy, utilities and capital projects. From there Jan spent some 15 years in various senior leadership roles with “conventional” national and international waste management companies in Europe and Asia. He was appointed CEO of COVRA starting 2014. His specific interests today are in balancing the triangle of technology and operations, finance and economics, governance and policy development.
